THE
MAJOR
Two majors are
offered by the Hebrew Division, a Hebrew major, and a Hebraic Studies
major. Most of our majors prefer the Hebrew major, which requires 24
credits (usually eight courses) in advanced Hebrew literature courses. Some
students, particularly those who began the study of Hebrew in college, take
the Hebraic Studies major which permits the substitution of some courses in
Hebraic Culture, conducted in English, for advanced Hebrew literature
courses.
In line with an educational philosophy stressing individual student
development, the Hebrew Division has consistently encouraged qualified
students to work on their own research projects by enrolling in the
"Independent Studies" or "Honors" courses offered each
term. Such courses allow for maximum exposure to areas of study not being
covered during a specific term, and for undertaking specific projects in
close consultation with appropriate faculty members. In addition, there
exists a series of Seminars, which allows for specialized and intensive
research by advanced majors, and minors.
